Anne Jacqueline Hathaway is an American actress, born on November 12, 1982. Her place of birth is Brooklyn, New York. As a young child, she was inspired from her mother, Kathleen Ann (née McCauley), who was an actress as well. Anne was guided by her mother. She belongs to Irish and French descent. At the age of six, Hathaway moved to Millburn, New Jersey, along with her family. As a child she had the dream of becoming a nun. Her brother’s approach changed her religious leanings. Anne received her early education from Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. As a graduate she used to participate in many plays at Millburn High School. Anne became the first teenage girl, who got accepted for the The Barrow Group Theater Company’s acting program. At a tender age of sixteen, she was cast in the short-lived Fox television series ‘Get Real’.

Drama film, The Other Side of Heaven (2001), was the first motion picture in which Anne Hathaway performed. Her role was opposite Christopher Gorham and she was preferred over 500 girls to perform that role. Unfortunately, the film received negative feedback, but did well as religion-themed film. However, she gained fame through The Princess Diaries. A BBC critic applauded Anne’s efforts of in the following words: “Hathaway shines in the title role and generates great chemistry.” The Princess Diaries also became a commercial success, amounting to US $165 million around the world. Consequently, this was the first debut film for young Anne. She starred in the Encores! Great American Musicals in February 2002. During the next three years, Anne opted for ‘family-oriented’ films.

After mesmerizing her fans through family-friendly films, Anne Hathaway made a transition during 2005. Now, she started to perform bold and dramatic roles. Her performance was equally brilliant with these roles as well. “Havoc” was the first R-rated American film that Hathaway starred in, she played the role of a spoiled socialite. For the sake of playing her role she had to appear nude in some shots, however, Hathaway explained that this was the demand of her work. In Ang Lee’s drama Brokeback Mountain (2005), she was cast alongside Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Her literary performance includes working in the film Becoming Jane (2007), in which she played the role of
English author- Jane Austen.

Hathaway also has a long list of achievements and titles to her name. Anne Hathaway was nominated for the Paper Mill’s “Rising Star Award” as a school girl for the best high school performance by an actress in New Jersey. She was named one of People Magazine’s ‘Breakthrough Stars of 2001’. She was one of the Teen People Magazine’s 25 Hottest Stars Under 25 in June 2002 issue. She bagged the Clarence Derwent Award for her performance as “Lili” in Encores! production of “Carnival” (2002). Her ranking in different magazines are also praiseworthy. Hathaway was ranked #85 on FHM’s sexiest women in the world list 2006. She was ranked #2 on Glamour Magazine’s Most Glamourous Women in the World list (2009).

Anne Hathaway is also involved in a number of charity works, which justifies her point of view – “Kindness is really important to me in finding my own prince – so are patience and a sense of humor. Without those qualities he’s no Prince Charming!”. Charities she is involved with includes The Creative Coalition, The Step Up Women’s Network, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Human Rights Campaign, and The Lollipop Theatre Network, an organization that screens films for ill children.
