Actress, comedienne, and Television show host Whoopi Goldberg was born as Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955 in Manhattan New York City. Her mother Emma a Nurse by profession raised her and her brother Clyde as a single working woman after Goldberg’s father abandoned the family. She was raised in the housing project in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Her mother did several jobs apart from nursing so that she could make the ends meet for her children.

Goldberg unknowingly has dyslexia, which affected her studies and made her to drop out of high school at the age of 17 but this did not affect her Behavior towards life as she has been known in her career as a unique and socially conscious talent with articulately liberal views.

Goldberg initially worked in a funeral parlor and as a bricklayer but along with this she started to play small parts in Broadway. Later she moved to California and worked with improv groups including the spontaneous combustion and developed her skills as a stand-up comedienne.

She trained under an acting teacher Uta Hagen at the HBO studios in New York. She first appeared on screen in 1981-82 in citizen:  I’m not losing my mind; I’m giving it away an Avant-grade ensemble feature by San Francisco film maker William Farley. She did a one woman show by the name of Moms Mabley an HBO Production which gave her prominence. Later on she did a role in the Steven Spielberg’s production movie The Color purple in 1985. She received much critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for her role and became a major star in the Hollywood industry.

Whoopi Goldberg did couple of movies after that including Burglar (1987), the telephone (1988) and Jumpin’ jack flash (1986) all these movies were mostly off-beat to formulaic comedies. She made her mark as a mainstay in Hollywood by her Oscar- winning performance in the box office hit movie Ghosts (1990) in which she played as a psychic. She became the first Black American to receive the Academy award for the best supporting actress in nearly fifty years and only the second black American to win an Oscar acting award.

Being a huge fan of the original star trek series she was offered a role in Star trek: the next generation she could not help but jump for the opportunity. She was starred in two of the Star trek movies which earned her a nomination In The Golden Globe Awards.

Goldberg apart from doing big budget movies also did some other projects which including contributing her voice to many cartoons; she did a few independent movies, tributes, documentaries and a for TV movie. Whoopi Goldberg’s career is vast in term of her work in several fields of entertainment, apart from being an actor she is also an author of a book. She hosted Academy awards and also she released an album. As for Whoopi’s personal life she was married three time first to Alvin Martin (divorced 1979) had one daughter Alexandra , then to a cinematographer David Claessen (1988) and in 1994 to actor Lyle Trachtenberg. Goldberg was once guilty of using Marijuana and described herself publicly as a high functioning drug addict. She with her trademark dreadlocks, wide impish grin and piercing humor has brought her a ground breaking status in the Hollywood industry putting her in the top ranking artists.
